An easy guide to the Pathways and core competencies

Confused by Toastmasters Pathways? Kristen Nichols explains how to navigate, personalize, and maximize your learning journey.

In this District Compass interview, Kristen Nichols addresses common confusion around the Toastmasters Pathways learning program. Many members struggle to visualize their progress without a physical manual, but Kristen breaks down the structure to make it easier to understand and navigate.

She explains that each Pathways path consists of five levels, each with its own theme:

  1. Level 1: Mastering fundamentals

  2. Level 2: Self-assessment and introspection

  3. Level 3: Expanding knowledge with new experiences

  4. Level 4: Applying skills and building expertise

  5. Level 5: Demonstrating mastery and self-reflection

No matter which of the 11 (and counting) paths you choose, these themes remain consistent. Each level builds upon the previous one, creating a clear developmental journey.

Kristen also highlights that Pathways is built around five core competencies: public speaking, interpersonal communication, strategic leadership, management, and confidence. While each path emphasizes different competencies, you can tailor your experience by choosing electives that suit your personal or professional goals. For example, the Engaging Humor path focuses on public speaking and confidence but can incorporate leadership with the right electives.

Addressing the perception that Pathways is only for people in corporate jobs, Kristen emphasizes that the skills gained are transferable to all aspects of life. She recommends exploring a helpful graphic in the Toastmasters Resource Library (“paths and core competencies”) to see which paths align with your desired competencies and how you can customize your learning experience.

Ultimately, Kristen encourages members to view Pathways as a flexible, empowering framework for personal growth—one you can shape to fit your unique ambitions, whether that’s advancing your career, writing a book, or developing confidence in any area of life.
